How To Dress For Family Portraits – We always talk about what to wear to your family photo session, but what about what to avoid? Sometimes it’s easier to read about the don’ts than the million possibilities of what could be amazing, right?
Also, these are just my opinions, and remember that I’ve spent 10 years photographing families and learning that I don’t love them anymore. If you like contrasts, ignore all of this.

Outdoor Family Photo Ideas For All Ages
The first is that I had to wear uncomfortable shoes that I couldn’t move around in during the photo shoot (yes, I’m talking about moms). Most of my sessions involve playing; So if you’re wearing heels, It will be really difficult to keep your family free and happy. There are many places where the heel will be difficult. If you really want to wear them, bring an option you like for more playful images and save the heels for a select few photos.
The second way you can go wrong with shoes is to wear them in a way that doesn’t match your clothes. Not all sports shoes, especially sports shoes, usually look good. You know what a great color for boys? Brown. You can’t go wrong with brown.

Ok This is a personal preference. But over the years, whenever clients wear a lot of blue, something seems off to me. I tend to edit warmly; I like to play with the golden sun, probably because the blue absorbs the warmth in the image. So if you want to add blue to your session, it’s just one article of clothing (or two if it’s a pair of jeans). Always avoid bright blue. My favorite blue is a bit dirty. You can say that’s funny. Another thing to consider in this same area is the length of the mother’s dress. Don’t wear anything too short for the same reason…arms are raised and bodies are swaying.
Another mistake moms can make is wearing a dress that doesn’t cover their bra properly. If you need it, you can skip the bra and not worry about baking soda if you’re comfortable with it. Constant bra adjustments will not lead to a careless session.
So this method can go a bit wrong. Don’t dress too big, It will influence the subject. But at the same time, if the colors are contrast-y (a light and a dark color) together, you don’t want a minimalist look. A perfect example of this is men’s shirts with small checker patterns because they look cool when photographed. Same with very close stripes. The images below are a good example.

I know it’s a big deal to wear matching outfits/patterns, but I love it when there’s a variety of colors and patterns. So if you’re shopping for mommy and me outfits or matching sibling outfits, keep looking! The main reason for this is that everyone wearing the same color gets confused with each other. Good 😉 If you want to wear the same color as someone else in your family, just choose a different color. Hoodies are not a good idea because they can flap in the wind and look weird. It just feels so casual to me.

I’ll start by saying that this is my personal preference. But if you like my work, you’ll agree with me, right? Hahahaha. I’m not a huge fan of black clothing items. All the details get lost in the shadows and it makes your images blurry. gray Dark jeans and olive are the best substitutes for black. But not the navy. Because I don’t like blue anymore, Haha.
And conversely, wearing bright white is not my favorite. It can throw bright spots on faces in certain lighting or appear blue rather than white. Whites and creams are great, though. White lace is great because it has so many textures.
Always include some neutrals (cream, brown and gray). Choosing too many colors and not enough neutrals is a mistake. For example, Not everyone should wear purple and yellow. Instead, Light purple/purple (avoid light purple); Another person in pale yellow; One in cream and the other in a brown floral dress. Obviously you want beauty for your photos, but it’s also a comfortable feel. I’m going to have fun playing games, so there’s no point in wearing ties and blazers. For dads in particular, I want to stay away from dress pants and business shirts because they tend to be uncomfortable. The main thing is to have fun. In addition, Basic long sleeves are so puffy that they barely look up in photos (and they’re too sheer for me).
Family Portraits — Community Photography
You probably already know this, but the words on your clothes, logos, Or it is very important not to dress the characters. A small Nike or Carhartt logo in the upper corner of your t-shirt will draw the eye more than the subject in the photo…your family. That’s your entire photo section, so let’s focus on you.
I recommend that any child or walker who will be holding more than 50% of the photo session should not wear a skirt or dress. One reason is that their diapers are about to pop. You can definitely get some cute flowers, but there’s something else to consider. Parents always try not to touch the skirt while holding the child. But she seemed to be floating there. My pictures are related, so I want to see your baby girl wrapped in your arms, not the baby on the water.
So here is a better option. Put her in a bra. Or a cute top with drawstring tights and ruffle-butt bloomers over them. Or a cute baby bottom and top. Something without rice. There are so many cute options out there.
If you can, put your personality into your clothes. If your daughter likes ruffled dresses, wear one, but if she hates it, go with a bell bottom knot.
