Young children often experience a lot of big emotions and are not always sure what to do with them. An empathetic teacher creates an environment where these big feelings can be expressed and reassures the little ones that they are seen and heard. When handled with care and empathy, children can better navigate these new emotions with confidence.

An organized teacher is a teacher in control. Organization provides the necessary structure for children to explore the possibilities of the classroom through clear expectations and guidelines. What Are The Duties Of An Early Childhood Teacher?

The day begins for me the moment I wake up from my slumber. As I enjoy my last moments in bed, I begin to think through the day. “What’s happening today, what special events are planned, is it someone’s birthday, do I need flat shoes for a lot of walking, or can I splash out with something fun to entertain my ever-curious kindergarteners?”

Once I get to school, my mind is engaged with everything that needs to be ready for our busy children’s classroom. The daily schedule is prepared with visual instructions so that the children know what to expect; new readers are selected for each student ready to support their individual learning requirements and interests, fine motor development activities are placed on morning-ready tables that make work a breeze. All of this is done as students begin to arrive and poke their heads into the classroom to say “Hi” and maybe show or tell me something they’ve been up to since we were last together. Music plays to signal the start of the day and I meet my 15 eager faces lined up ready to go.

The kindergarten engages in literacy learning every morning. This includes explicit teaching and learning within our units of study. Students move through a series of experiences involving reading, writing, fine motor skills as well as learning about formal and informal speaking and listening.

I can take a break or maybe go with them for supervision, run my weekly sewing club or take a lunch break before preparing for the afternoon.

After lunch we continue our learning journey. We can do practical mathematics or continue our unit of inquiry through an interdisciplinary approach. Common topics such as science, history and the creative arts are explored together using lines of inquiry to guide our exploration of a central idea.

During the week, our students have the privilege of experiencing subjects such as music, art and sport, taught by specialist teachers in their given field. There is a lot that needs to be pulled out and put back in a kindergarten classroom, and while students learn to be good helpers, this time is invaluable for jobs, including communicating with parents or working with other teachers to develop rich learning experiences and environments for our students.

From learning how to pack a bag to writing a story or creating a tool to test the weather, my day at Kindergarten is always filled with awe and wonder. Seeing young students discover new knowledge, skills and independence is a gift I treasure.
