What To Know About Hiring A Tutor For Your Child
After working as a private tutor for many years and running my own agency for 3 years, I thought it would be helpful to share what I’ve learned about tutors, the rates they charge and the factors that go into those rates .
While the hourly rate for tutoring can range from minimum wage to that of a corporate lawyer, tutors can [roughly] be split into three categories based on their rates and experience: junior tutors, professional tutors, and boutique tutors.
Because they don’t have much experience working or tutoring, clients aren’t willing to pay them as much as tutors with more experience. Similarly, most young people (even those with a good education!) don’t value their time as much as those with more work experience. A gig that pays $40 an hour is pretty good compared to most of the other options available to recent graduates.
Junior tutors also rarely rely on tutoring as their main source of income – it’s usually something they enjoy that brings in some extra cash or a career they’re trying out.
How Much Does Tutoring Cost?
As I mention in my other articles, 90% of effective tutoring is about social skills, and people either have them at this point in their lives or they don’t – it’s not something that develops with experience. You can find a lot of good (and some great) teachers for a low price if you’re willing to try out a few different people and take a chance on someone green.
Unfortunately, cheap and effective junior tutors soon find their services in high demand and start raising their prices.
After a few years of experience, successful junior teachers become professional teachers. Those who make it are generally a fairly select group.
First, they almost always have impressive credentials, including higher degrees, high test scores, and various other accolades. While it’s true that these things don’t necessarily make a good tutor, they can certainly make a tutor attractive to clients.
How To Become A Successful Tutor
Second, successful private tutors possess a wide range of generally applicable social skills in addition to the more obvious academic credentials. They must be excellent communicators, patient, empathetic, enthusiastic, friendly, sociable, very good with all types of people, self-motivated and extremely organized. When all of this is combined with their academic talent, those who choose to become professional tutors have many high-paying options available to them when they choose to enter the job market.
For all the impressive credentials a tutor possesses, it might still seem excessive to pay $100 for someone to spend an hour with your child doing math in high school – I definitely thought it was when I first started with tutoring. However, after working as a tutor myself, I began to understand why those rates weren’t excessive or unreasonable.
While it may seem like you’re paying for the tutor’s credentials and experience, you’re mostly paying for the tutor’s time. While home tutoring is billed on an hourly basis, your tutor spends significantly more time on each session than the hour he or she spends with you.
In my personal experience, I found that for every hour I spent working with a student, I would travel another hour. Scheduling clients throughout the week was always a pain, and even with the most optimal schedule, I could rarely see more than 4 students on any given day, or fit in more than 16 hours of sessions per week, including weekends.

Other teachers I’ve spoken to or worked with have similar limitations. Even at $100/hour, after factoring in self-employment taxes, the cost of private health insurance, and the fairly dry summer months, the average teacher’s annual income isn’t that impressive.
Most tutors, and certainly all the good ones, enjoy working with their students and don’t choose to tutor to get rich – the rates they charge are above all an economic necessity to keep doing the work they love.
What about those hyper-expensive tutors, the ones who charge hundreds of dollars for every hour of their time? Are they worth it?
I can’t answer this definitively as I haven’t worked with any of them personally, but I have a hard time imagining they are.

Working with a tutor is a learning process that takes time, and, like the old analogy, learning is much more like baking a cake than running a race. A tutor can motivate, support and help, but in the end everyone learns at their own pace. Just like setting your oven to 1200 degrees won’t bake your cake three times as fast, a boutique teacher who charges three times as much as another just can’t get you to absorb a difficult concept three times faster without running some kind of Vulcan. mind fusion.
It is often said that you get what you pay for, but the tutoring market doesn’t quite work that way. If you don’t live in New York City and can’t hire us, think about what really matters to you when hiring a tutor.
If budgeting is an issue, know that there are many talented junior tutors with rates you can probably afford. You just need to do the legwork and find them before they settle.
For those who can afford them, professional tutors are established, skilled, and they get the job done. Be sure to hire them early in the year as their schedules fill up quickly.
