If you’re anything like me, you get bombarded with ads for amazing vacations at surprisingly low prices. Some of these deals are too good to be true, while others may be just right for your next vacation. Read on as we share ways to figure out what a hotel will actually cost you. More importantly, how can you get the best deal on the hotel room you want for your next trip or vacation.
How Much Does A Hotel Room Cost
This article was inspired by a heated argument between a couple I work with, named Chris and Sean. It seems that they come back from every trip they make fighting over money, and what they spent on those numerous trips. This otherwise happy couple comes with different views on money. Somewhere between each of their views is a compromise and probably the right financial options.

Most recently they spent five nights at a resort in Palm Springs, and they have different opinions on what the stay was worth. To help get to the bottom of the hotel expense drama, I had them get me a copy of an itemized copy of their hotel bill.
Chris- he was confident that the hotel only cost $150 per night, which works out to about $750 for the stay.
Sean- looked at the bill and was even more adamant that the hotel cost about $600 per night.
How were they so far apart on this? Who is right? Financial Planning for couples is not necessarily good or bad, but to be clear, neither Chris nor Sean had any idea what the hotel room would cost.

Chris- is an eternal optimist. He picked with the lowest rate of a night in the hotel as the final cost. He assumed that all the nights of their stay would be at this low price. Not to mention all the other costs associated with travel such as taxes, resort fees, wi-fi, parking, and any other way the hotel can make money from its guests.
He is the one who booked the hotel room. When Chris saw the great midweek room rate of $150 per night, he thought the cost for five nights would total $750. It would be great if this were true, but the reality is that room rates are often much higher at resorts on weekends. Conversely, they are often much cheaper in the middle of the week. The room rate also ignores all other costs associated with a hotel stay.
Sean- on the other hand, took a slightly more pessimistic view of what the hotel would cost. With the final bill in hand, he divided the total of $3054.55 by five nights to get a cost per night of just over $600 per night. $610.91 per night to be exact. While a large chunk of this bill was for the hotel room, they also visited the spa and dined (and partook in a few cocktails by the pool) at the property during their trip. They charged these extra costs to the House.

All this stuff can add up quickly. For the basic hotel stay, they had taxes, parking, and the annoying resort fee.
Plus, they enjoyed the spa which had resort prices, OUCH! This trip was all about relaxation, and spent most of their time drinking and eating by the pool. They racked up a whopping $1000 in food and drink expenses during their stay. .
If you’re looking to get the most bang for your travel buck, compare the total cost of the hotel room when you book. What extra fees will you pay? Do they charge for breakfast? Will you have to pay for parking? Is Wi-Fi included?
Look at the services you will be using and take them into account when looking at the total cost of your hotel stay. If you are not driving, then parking fees are not a big issue. Staying in San Francisco or Manhattan with a car can set you back an extra $50 per night.
Beware: That In Room Coffee Just Might Cost You
Having breakfast included is just convenient and can be a great way to save some additional money. This is especially important if you are in an isolated resort. While it is less valuable in the center of a major city. Option to have breakfast included for an extra $100 per night. No thanks, I can walk down the street to a comparable restaurant and save some big bucks.
We all love to be constantly connected. Check to see what the hotel charges for Wi-Fi. This is probably even more important when traveling abroad. Since your basic cell service may not work at all or come with horribly expensive charges.
When flying, another thing to consider is airport transfers. I just came back from Costa Rica where the airport pick up was included, but the return was not. The resort was a few hours from the airport and charged $150 per van for return transportation. in this as a savings of $150 by getting free transportation from the airport. However, the van holds ten people, and it was just my husband and I on the way back. If we had made friends and shared the van we could have saved more money. Or maybe, we found a resort with round-trip airport transfer included.
Finally, we cannot forget about taxes when booking a hotel room. While the tax rate will be the same at comparable hotels in the same city, they can still add up. In the case of Sean and Chris, the taxes were $154.55, which I remind you was more than Chris thought the cost of the hotel room per night. Probably not life-changing for this couple, but just a good reminder that getting a better deal on a hotel room will also save you more than you think. In this case, the city tax was about 15% – so every dollar less the hotel room costs, you will spend about $1.15 less, when you include taxes.

If you asked me, and since you’re still reading, I assume you are, the hotel room costs $1454.55. This is roughly $291 per night. This is the total for the hotel room rate, taxes, parking, and resort fees. Essentially all of the things you have to pay to stay there. It does not include food, drinks, or a visit to the spa.
To recap, Chris underestimated the cost of the hotel by about half. Whereas, Sean overestimated and thought the hotel room cost about twice what it actually cost.
Who exactly is here? Your budget will be happier if you overestimate the cost of things. Hopefully, this will lead to smarter spending down the road. Leave some padding in your travel budget; many people end up spending more money than they realize when they’re on the road. It’s your vacation; you want to treat yourself, don’t you? (Parks and Recreation reference). That being said, if you know in advance that the frozen margaritas at the pool cost $25 each, you may choose to have a little less.
Sean and Chris make a good income and can afford a few days away whether the bill was $1000 or even $5000. All the same, they were arguing about this trip, which translates into less financial happiness. Getting on the same page before the vacation will help you make smarter financial choices as a couple. Hotel room rates are rising fast, so fast in fact that the pace of increase is being underestimated in official government data, mostly in the monthly price change series from year to year for “accommodations outside the home” issued by the Office of Labor Statistics. .
