I get a lot of questions about PODS from people I’ve moved, not to mention about moving containers in general. Here are 11 of the most common.

Mobile containers are basically large boxes that can store your stuff. But they’re portable, like a drive-through garage.
PODS take them wherever you need them, wait for you to fill them up, and take them wherever you want to put your stuff. (They also have their own storage facility if you can’t park it anywhere.) PODS are especially useful when your moving date is up in the air.

How do you get one After you arrange your PODS container online or over the phone, someone drives a car called a “PODZILLA” (yes, seriously) to drive your container to your pre-agreed area and drop it off for you.
It could take you days or weeks to fill the containers…heck, even years–PODS will be billed monthly no matter how long you keep them. (So don’t keep a month and a day because that’s two months’ worth!)
According to their own website, PODS personnel state that “no motor vehicle of any type may be stored in a PODS storage container.”
In addition to the “flammable/hazardous material” factor, PODS said it was impossible to secure the car inside the container. Note that we read in the PODS FAQ that while PODS does not recommend storing anything with gas in it, there doesn’t seem to be anything stopping people from storing motorcycles, lawnmowers, and ride-on vehicles after they’ve drained gas from the tank Lawn mower. Doing so would void any insurance or coverage for loss or damage the customer may have, they added.

If controlling your schedule is the most important factor in your move, and if you can move on your own and are on a budget, then using PODS is definitely worth it.
That’s because full-service movers are usually more expensive and less flexible. Hiring a full-service moving company means they’ll bring someone in to move your stuff, sure, but the cost is usually much more expensive, and it can take weeks – if not more – to get it right. On the other hand, your PODS containers are billed monthly and even driven for you.

Yes. The person putting down your container may not be doing any lifting and handling, but they’re still providing a service — a service with a set of rules and restrictions, and some decisions about where they can or cannot place the container.
How ‘pandemic Pods’ Work, How Much They Cost, And Who They Leave Behind
Here’s your cue: Be nice. I’ve never driven to PODS myself, but my impression is that they have to frantically pick up and drop off containers all over the area, sometimes taking ten to twelve hours. Work with them when they arise. Help them out by giving them a general idea of where you want them to put their containers, then step back and let them do their thing. Say thank you. shake hands. If they’re cool, give them five or ten dollars.
On their website, PODS gives a range of costs for a long distance move based on their size. They say 80 percent of the long-distance moves they perform cost between $1,237 and $2,999 (including a month’s storage fee).
Of course, your costs could fall anywhere in or outside of this range, depending on what you need and how far you need to go.
As the smallest container PODS offers, this 7′ wide by 7′ long by 8′ tall steel and aluminum box is only $149.99 per month (again depending on where you live and what time of year). Pickup and drop off are additional $74.99, but sometimes included in your package. You will need to contact someone at PODS directly for specifics.

On the PODS website, they have a really cool storage calculator. Enter the amount of each item you need to move – including boxes, so you really need to know how much you have! – You’ll see your container fill up as you keep adding items until you reach the end and get your final (estimated) answer.
PODS containers are (supposedly) completely waterproof. Although on the PODS website, the preferred term seems to be “weather resistance”.
PODS people liken their small container to a walk-in closet and recommend this size for living spaces of 500 square feet or less. (Container weight limit: 5, 200 lbs.)
Larger containers are recommended for spaces of 3 or 4 rooms, or up to 1,200 square feet. (Weight limit: 4, 200 lbs.)

An important point to consider: the more stuff you have, the more important it is to pack it well. Professional moving companies can have a big impact on the final cost of your move.
Although they provide a great deal of general information about climate controlled storage versus purely temperature controlled facilities, the only statement PODS provides on their website about their own storage facilities is that they do not strictly adhere to climate controlled standards.
That said, your airtight containers are stored in an indoor facility, so the elements have little chance of touching your items. However, you may want to avoid storing items that are susceptible to extreme temperatures and/or high humidity—fine art and electronics immediately come to mind.
