Doctors are still high earners, although few consider themselves “rich,” according to a recent survey by Medscape, a physician-focused information service from WebMD.
A Hacked Kaiser Permanente Employee’s Emails Led To Breach Of 70,000 Patient Records
Using a third-party online data collection site, Medscape surveyed 24,216 physicians in 25 specialties from February 1 to 17, 2012. Physician earnings ranged from about $156,000 a year for pediatricians to about $315,000 for radiologists and orthopedic surgeons. The top earners – orthopedic surgeons and radiologists – were the same as last year, followed by cardiologists who earned $314,000 and anesthesiologists who earned $309,000.
The doctors with the lowest salary are the family people. Pediatricians and family physicians earn about $156,000 and $158,000, respectively. Internists and psychiatrists rank a notch above, about $165,00 and $170,000, respectively.
The pay figures are below figures from other survey groups: A report by the Medical Group Management Association with data from 2010 found that average compensation for radiologists was $471,253 and for pediatricians it was $192,148, Kaiser Health News reports.
Overall, wages were not much different from last year, according to Medscape, but wages generally declined. Radiologists and orthopedic surgeons saw their annual compensation drop by 10%. General surgeons saw the biggest pay cuts, about 12% since 2010, while ophthalmologists saw a 9% increase and pediatricians’ earnings rose 5%.

Despite their substantial salaries, only about 11% of doctors considered themselves rich, which the survey authors attributed to high debts and medical expenses. About 51% of all physicians and 46% of primary care physicians said they believed they were fairly compensated. When asked if they would choose a career in medicine if they had it to do over again, 54% of doctors surveyed said yes – down from 69% the previous year.

The survey also addressed the gender gap in compensation, stating that male doctors earn 40% more than female doctors. The survey authors say part of the disparity is due to specialty choices and lifestyle decisions, suggesting that if female doctors worked the same hours as men, they would likely receive more equal pay.
Interestingly, the survey revealed that doctors in the North East earned the least. The highest-paid physicians worked in the North Central region (Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and South and North Dakota), earning an average of $234,000. Next came physicians in the South Central and Great Lakes region, with an average salary of $228,000. Northeast docs earned an average of $204,000.

Despite the widespread push to reduce “unnecessary care” and lower health care costs, about 67% of doctors said they would not reduce the number of tests, procedures or treatments they perform to meet insurer treatment guidelines. Their reasoning was that either such guidelines were not in the best interest of their patients or that doctors still needed to practice defensive medicine.

In light of the socio-chemical challenges facing the community, this year, Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles physicians are recognizing National Medical Day in a different way by giving back to an organization that has helped promote health and wellness in their communities.
On March 30, 2021, at their weekly medical meeting, Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles physicians presented a $20,000 check to St. Margaret’s Center, a community center serving the residents of Inglewood and Lennox. Many people practically tuned in to watch the festival.

“Supporting those in need is not only part of our career as physicians, but part of who we are at Kaiser Permanente,” said Dr. Kirk Tamaddon, Regional Medical Director and Chief of Staff, Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles. “This National Doctors Day, my colleagues were inspired to donate to St. Margaret’s Center because of the powerful work they do for communities in need. We strongly believe that health does not exist without food and shelter.”
St. Margaret’s Center provides comprehensive emergency and support services to approximately 10,000 undocumented individuals annually. Over the years, many have relied on St. Margaret’s Center for services and referrals for food, shelter, legal, medical, employment, housing, education and social services. Currently, about 700 people, many of whom live below the federal poverty line, visit the center each week for one or more of its programs.
“We are extremely grateful for the support of doctors! said Mary Agnes Erlandson, director of St. Margaret’s Center. “Knowing that healthcare workers have been on the front lines over the past year, giving so much of themselves, we are thrilled that they have gone the extra mile to support families in need in our community.”
When asked how these donations will impact the work being done at the center, Erlandson added, “We will be able to help many more people with the critical services that low-income people need to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table during these difficult times.” . Some of our emergency services funding has dried up, so this gift comes at the perfect time!”
