The world’s top sports agents closed contracts totaling more than $41.2 billion in 2020, generating $1.9 billion in commissions, including several deals that are in the $500 million strike range for a single athlete.
How Are Sports Agents Paid
Scott Boras takes the top spot this year. In 2020, the baseball agent negotiated 13 contracts worth more than $100 million, five of which were over $200 million and two over $300 million. Boras has secured a total of $3.2 billion for his clients – 30% more than in 2019 – and is generating more than $160 million in commissions for his Boras Corporation. Among the big ones: right fielder Bryce Harper’s $330 million deal with the Phillies, Gerrit Cole’s $324 million deal with the Yankees, and a pair of $245 million deals that sent Stephen Strasburg to the Washington Nationals and Anthony Rendon to Los Angeles Angeles.

Falling into second place is soccer mega-agent Jonathan Barnett, who negotiated $1.42 billion in active contracts and transfer fees for ranked clients, earning his agency more than $140 million in commissions. Barnett, who earlier this year sold his London-based Stellar Group to Los Angeles-based talent and literary agency ICM Partners to form the new brand ICM Stellar Sports, has firmly established himself as the world’s leading soccer agent and now a major player in the global athlete representation industry.
Agent commissions are typically capped and regulated by the players’ unions, with the highest commissions allowed by FIFA (10%) and Major League Baseball (5%), giving soccer and baseball agents a ranking advantage. The NHL and NBA both allow commissions to reach to 4%, and the NFL limits them to 3%.
Soccer agent David Mulojeta made the biggest jump on the list this year, jumping 30 places to No. 8 with more than $1.5 billion in negotiated deals and $46.6 million in commissions. This makes him the NFL’s top agent and also the highest-ranking black agent on the list. 38 years old, who is the son of U.S. Immigrants from Eritrea, entered the business in 2008 as an Athletes First intern and became a full equity partner in 2019. In just the past two years, Mulugata has negotiated some of the NFL’s biggest contracts, including quarterback Deshaun Watson’s $156 million deal with the Texans. Michael Thomas’ $96 million deal with the Saints and cornerback Jalen Ramsey’s $105 million deal with the Rams.

Football Agents Pick Up $548 Million From Transfers In 2018
Mulgheta is joined on this year’s list by his Athletes First colleagues, Todd France (who left CAA earlier this year) at No. 12, as well as Brian Murphy, who is co-founder and CEO of the agency, at No. 16. Together, they represent -$4.4 billion in NFL contracts counted in this year’s rankings, the most ever for a single sport under a single agency.
Clutch Sports Team’s Rich Paul continued the rise that began with his first appearance in the rankings in 2016 with a jump from last year’s 19th place to 9th, his first time in the top ten. He is now the second most powerful basketball agent in the world behind Excel Sports Management’s Jeff Schwartz (No. 3), and played a major role in building the roster of the NBA champion Lakers through his representation of James, as well as Anthony Davis, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope , JR Smith and Dion Waiters.
The three companies at the top of the list of the most important agencies also dominate the list of agents: The Creative Artists Agency leads the way with 11 agents in the top 50, followed by Wasserman with six, and Excel Sports Management with four. Of course, none of these representatives even come close to the dominance of Boras, who has secured higher player wages than his three closest competitors combined.
Newcomers this year include: No. 16 Brian Murphy (Football), No. 19 Federico Pastorello (Football), No. 25 Frank Trimboli (Football), No. 47 Taika Sullivan (Basketball), No. 48 Chris Cabot (Football) and No. 50 Jeff Jackson (hockey).

The rankings refer to player contracts set in the team sports of basketball, football, baseball, hockey and soccer, as well as endorsement earnings for golfers and tennis players. The customer numbers reflect only those counted in the ranking and may not reflect the total staff of an agent or agency.
For team sports, agents and agencies are awarded only for the active contracts they manage and/or have negotiated for players that are included in the rating. Minor league players and free agents are excluded. The total managed contract value for each sport was multiplied by the maximum agent fee (or average when there is no maximum) as allowed by each players union: NFL (3%), NHL (4%), NBA (4%), MLB (5%) and FIFA (10%). Only contract earnings are counted for team athletes; endorsement earnings are not.
In tennis and golf, agents do not make commissions from their clients’ profits on the court/court, only from the marketing money they help generate, for which they receive an average of 20%. Hence, agencies and agents representing these players. Both sports are measured by marketing data and not wins.
Team sports contracts are included using their full value and are credited to the negotiating agent/agency. The certification funds are included on an annual basis and this year include profits for 2020 only.

Sixty-seven pages of safety protocols sat on a table in Andy Mota’s South Florida home a week ago. The document, created by Major League Baseball to explain in great detail how the league can prevent the spread of the new coronavirus during a potentially shortened season, required close reading.
However Mota couldn’t help but let his thoughts wander, thinking about players in distress. In addition to his major league clientele, he manages 25 minor leagues, a team that will face the likelihood that its 2020 season will not take place.
