I know what you’re thinking, with all the pressures of testing and a year of growth, there’s not much time for a fun Friday. Don’t worry, here at 4 Kinder Teachers we make sure all of our Kindergarten Fun Friday activities are standards based, rigorous, teacher, student and principal approved, and most importantly, FUN!! To add some extra excitement and keep our kids wanting to come back for more, we’ve made (almost) every Friday a FUN Friday!

To make these fun learning activities for kindergarten, we’d take whatever concept we’ve been teaching and combine a great activity, usually a fun art project or maybe making delicious food, with one of our favorite children’s books! Our kindergartners never wanted to miss a Friday and went home to tell their parents what a great time they had! Here are some of our best ideas for fun activities to do with preschoolers. We will create a more detailed blog for each of our fun Friday ideas. Stay tuned for details! They can also be turned into fun activities with preschoolers.

As I mentioned earlier, we often planned our fun Friday activities around a beautiful picture book. Here is one example.

At the beginning of the school year, we were busy getting to know and appreciate each other. Every August we started learning to understand that everyone is unique and to learn to appreciate our differences. Elmer the Patchwork Elephant is one of the books we have chosen to help our students learn this valuable lesson. We read and discussed the book, did a wonderful Elmer art project, watched the animated read-aloud version on YouTube, and found fun music to dance to while marching in the elephant parade. Our students loved it. For more details, read our blog Make Friday FUN with these awesome Elmer the Elephant activities. Some other books that go well with beginning of the year concepts are The Rainbow Fish, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and Leo the Late Bloomer. Seasonal activities are perfect for a fun Friday. For example, in the fall, you would learn why the leaves change color. We read a book, watched a YouTube video, and went for a walk looking for colorful leaves. Before the walk, we taught our students to sign the words red, yellow, orange and brown. It was a quiet walk so as not to disturb nature. We walked around the school looking for leaves that change color. When they noticed the autumn leaves, the students would point and sign the color word. Finally, we would create beautiful (so the kids thought) tissue paper leaves and use them to decorate our rooms. You can imagine what you would say to your parents over the weekend. Learning about why leaves change color is also a fun science activity for preschoolers. Scheduling science experiments on Friday is another way to ensure a good day for students. Anything food related is a great Friday activity. Edible math is fantastic. This would include any mathematical activity involving food: sorting and drawing candies; a graphic representation of the first bite of a gingerbread; counting out goldfish crackers (by eating them) are just a few edible math ideas. Many kindergarten math concepts can be learned through food. The engagement is incredible.

Like I said before, anything food related is a great fun Friday experience. Our students often prepared special snacks to go along with our Fun Friday themes. When we made Rainbow Fish, our students made beautiful and delicious rainbow fish marshmallow pops. In the winter we made marshmallow snowmen (we used a lot of marshmallows). During our nonfiction unit, as we taught the texts, our students read and followed the recipes. Making mini tostadas was their favorite. Of course, you should pay attention to food allergies when using food. You may need to get creative with food substitutes so that everyone can enjoy the activity. We found that our parents were extremely helpful with this and with supplying most of the food. Just make sure you warn them in time.

You can always plan your excursions for Friday as it is a really fun but busy day. We found that planning excursions early in the week helped to reduce crowds, so we rarely planned excursions on Fridays. Instead, we did all the field trip related activities on Friday. For example, we can go to the zoo on Tuesday. Next Friday we would discuss our trip, write about it and create an art project related to the zoo. They would also read and recreate a fun book like Dear Zoo. For more details on great field trips for kindergarten, check out our Fantastic Field Trip Ideas & Virtual Field Trips blog.

Another great thing about Fun Friday is the ease with which you can incorporate fun writing activities. Kids love to write when they have something FUN to write about! We would save these writings and create a class textbook that we included in our class library. These books were very special for our students. They read them over and over again. At the end of the year, we made individual student memory books from these books. These memory books showed each student’s writing progress.

There are so many fun activities for preschool. We look forward to sharing them with you! You can decide whether you want to use them on Awesome Monday, Awesome Tuesday, Awesome Wednesday, or Fun Friday (it’s too hard to alliterate with

I think Groundhog Day is one of the least appreciated holidays unless you live in Punxsutawney, PA or happen to be in kindergarten. That’s right!
