How do I teach my child to count? What math activities should my child be learning? How do I teach my child to put up? Teacher observation As children engage in game play, preschool teachers have a rich opportunity to observe children’s thinking, reasoning, and mathematical skills at work. Simple finger games focus on key skills including counting, cardinality, subitizing, and combining and subtracting sets. New research shows that the use of fingers plays an important role in learning and understanding numeracy (despite what we’ve been told!). [2] You can also play finger games at any time – because your fingers are always with you!
Try this simple finger game. Hide your hands behind your back, and then show your hands holding up for a few seconds on each hand. For example, show three fingers on your right hand and two fingers on your left hand. Kids love it when you sing a little rhyme before they show their fingers: “Fingers, fingers, 1, 2, 3, how many fingers can you see?” Children then shout out how many fingers you are holding up.
To make the game a little more challenging, ask the children to use both hands and show five in a different way. You can also ask children to show you their fingers one more or one less than the number of fingers you held up. As children get older and more used, you can even ask them how many fingers you have
