Covid-19 is causing many challenges and concerns. For parents and guardians of school-age children (youth), everyday life is barely recognizable. We work, live and study from home together, trying to make everyone happy. The benefits of physical activity for youth are widely recognized, and during COVID-19, moving more and sitting less is critical to helping families maintain physical and mental health. Staying at home means that youth accustomed to school PE must find a “new normal” after school, active outings, organized sports, and outdoor play. Predominantly sedentary screen use has increased, likely due to the shift to online education, entertainment and “babysitting” services for overstretched parents.

In this blog, we focus on why encouraging our children to move more and sit less (if possible) is a priority in these difficult times. We deliberately focus on being inside; Going outside is also helpful if the guidelines allow.

Development Milestones For Your 13 Year Old Child

Young people should ideally get at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per day; this can include physical activity and a range of intensities. The week should include activities that stress the muscles and bones (like yoga and jumping) and some that help develop motor skills (including balance, coordination, and body awareness). These guidelines are based on evidence that active youth have better health outcomes, including cardiovascular and bone health, muscle fitness, and weight status.[1] Increased physical activity has also been linked to improved mental health, improved cognitive (mental) function, aspects of self-esteem, and reduced depressive symptoms in youth.[2, 3] As in adults, the immediate benefits of each bout of activity include reduced anxiety and ” may include a feel-good” effect.[1]

Although there is limited evidence of the benefits of certain home-based activities for youth, any activity that gets your child moving is beneficial. Exercise ideas include playing traditional indoor playground games (such as hide and seek, tag, jump), dancing to music, and engaging in creative activities (such as building an obstacle course, playing ball volleyball, making an action movie, or learning to juggle). Check out age-appropriate web-based exercise programs like The Body Coach. Yoga has a number of positive benefits for young people and anyone can do it at home. Try Cosmic Kids or The Yoga Crow. A number of organizations offer ideas for working at home (eg Active Schools, Change for Life and SportEngland). Try a few different activities to keep the youth interested. While 60 minutes a day is ideal, it’s not always achievable. Remember that moving more and sitting less is a good option.

Physical activity (both continuous and single bouts) can improve cognitive function and attention span in young people.[4, 5]  Thus, short bursts of exercise are a great way to break up work hours or screen time at school. and helps them focus on their work. Combining physical activity with learning has cognitive benefits [6] and is particularly engaging for young children. Turn “Simon Says” into a math game, “Simon Says Jump 4+5”. Perform an action (jump, burpee, etc.) as many times as shown on a pair of dice or playing card. Count how many times you can hit the ball between you. Ask your child to say a word and find things that start with each letter as quickly as possible around the house. The possibilities are endless.

Prolonged sitting (especially screen time) is associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes in youth.[7, 8] Interrupting sedentary time with regular movement whenever possible, and replacing sedentary play with active play can help. game.[9] In school-based settings, young people are happy to work for short periods while standing rather than sitting.[10] Try creating a makeshift table that the whole family can use.

Recent research provides guidance on how to create the best motivating environment to increase physical activity and well-being.[11-13] It is not rocket science to understand that young people are more motivated to participate in activities that are fun and enjoyable. Focus on the 3Cs of competence, control and connectivity.

3) Encourage your child to set achievable goals and keep records to track progress. We don’t know much about the value of youth using wearables and apps to track physical activity, but if you have them, they can help your child set and track goals. Remember to be realistic about the current conditions; unrealistic goals are unattainable and demystifying.

Control; It’s about involving your children in decision-making and providing them with choices. Choose which activity your kids want to do (up to four options), when and with whom. Connectivity; Related to feeling supported and connected to others. For some young people this can be achieved by parents/carers being active enough to help them feel competent and in control (see above). Being engaged and having fun sets a good example of good behavior and provides a focus on family time. For some young people, it helps to connect with peers through activities (for example, online or over the phone).

Being kind to ourselves is especially important during this time. Many of us are anxious and emotional (as are our children). Sometimes the timing isn’t right, so don’t force it. Try again another time.
