The Toronto Spartan Volleyball League is an LGBT indoor volleyball league that hosts games at various high school venues in the downtown/Leslieville/Riverdale areas of Toronto. While an evening at a public school gym might be the farthest thing from a day at the beach, you can definitely tap into that old high school vibe to put some energy behind your spikes. The league plays in both recreational and competitive divisions.
Go West, like the Toronto Spartans, plays in high school gyms, but sticks more closely to Etobicoke CI in Dundas and Islington. Until future budget meetings deem it absurd, the city plans several registered programs for many recreational sports. Programs are held once a week, usually in the evening, from Monday to Wednesday in schools and community centers. Programs include recreational groups, shared volleyball, and competitive play. Leagues At Pakmen Courts
The playing area consists of a court and a safety space around it that is 10 feet long on each side (50 x 80 feet). If you do not have this space, small courts can be built, call 1-800-494-3933 for recommendations. International organizations recommend a space of 70 x 100 feet and a buffer of 20 feet around the court but we feel this is too much due to the increased cost of sand around the court. The space above the play area should be free of obstructions. The playing surface should be level and have high quality sand to a thickness that prevents players from making contact with the ground surface.
Court dimensions are 29’6″ by 59′ feet and are measured from the outside edge of the boundary lines. The new 2 on 2 court size is 26’3″ x 52’6″. (We still prefer to build to the size of 6 by 6 courts so our courts fit both sizes and if the size 2 of the 2 goes back to the larger size.)
Boundary lines should be made of brightly colored tape or rope of similar properties (Note: Ropes can sometimes stop burning if you accidentally come in contact with them, 2″ wide webbing is recommended and what professionals use). (For safety reasons) (we recommend removing the lines at night to protect people from stumbling and hurting themselves) The plane of the net serves as the invisible center line of the court, dividing it into two halves.
We recommend that you call 811 to check your proposed courthouse location for underground services before you start digging. The court area should be excavated 1-1/2 to 3 feet deep depending on how your future court site flows. You will need to install one (or more) gutters leading from the bottom of the court. Perforated drainage pipe should be laid in the yard with a clean exterior at the top and the other open at the drainage ditch. (Don’t use tin pipe. It tends to collapse under the weight of the sand) Proper drainage is very important! You might find yourself playing in a big puddle of mud without it. (Even if the court is built on land, the sand will still retain water!).

Depending on how well your soil drains, cover the court area with a few inches to a foot thick of pea gravel. (If your budget is tight, place pea gravel around the perforated water pipe) Pea gravel around the perforated PVC pipe is useful to prevent the holes in the PVC pipe from getting buried. On top of the pea gravel lay our Sand Retention Fabric TM to prevent sand from seeping into the base gravel. (We have tested more than 30 different types of geo-textile to ensure that the money you spend on sand is not washed away by the rain.
