Use a black sharpie or marker to make small dots on a piece of white paper. Cut small squares out of different colored paper and place them in a bowl (you can help your toddler cut the paper if you can). Tape a piece of white paper to the table (so it doesn’t move while the kids work) and line the bowl with colored squares and Elmer’s glue.

What will they do? Use Elmer’s glue to place “baby dots” on the white paper covering each black dot. Then choose a colored square to stick on top of each glue dot.

That when it comes to liquid glue, “the dot is A LOT” (so you don’t have to squeeze out the whole bottle every time you glue something) – trust me as a former preschool/kindergarten teacher, this is a VERY important skill for them to learn 😉

Preparation: Write your child’s name, letters, numbers, shapes, or any skills you want to work on on a piece of white paper. Place dot markers and tape the paper to the table so it doesn’t move while your little one works.

What will they do? Use dot markers to mark the letters of their name (or whatever skill you chose to work on).

Take a piece of white paper and write down what skills you want your toddler to develop. You can choose straight lines or different types of lines (curved, zigzag, etc.), let them draw shapes, letters, their names or numbers. Put a small amount of paint on a paper plate or in some small cup or container and place the nozzle. You can also choose different color paints in which case you would like to provide more q-tips.

Roll out a long piece of white paper and put spots of brown paint on it. Line up some construction trucks.

Fill a small tub with water and dish soap (be sure to turn the temperature up when filling the tub so the dish soap bubbles up). Throw in some dirty trucks (see previous picture of trucks) and a sponge and place a small towel or washcloth to dry.

What will they do? Use a sponge and soapy water to wash the paint off the trucks, then dry them.

Color the white rice (see this blog post for details on how to do this). Pour the colored rice into a clear plastic container. Trace each shape magnet onto a large, white sheet of paper (you may choose to use matching colored markers to trace each shape or not, depending on how challenging you want the activity to be). I also wrote the names of each shape, but this part is not necessary. Place the magnetic figures in a box of colored rice and pin/glue the large white paper to the fridge or other magnetic surface.

Sift through the colored rice to find the magnetic shapes, identify them and find the matching shapes on the white paper.

Color the white rice (see this blog post for details on how to do this). Pour the colored rice into a clear plastic container. Place the puzzle pieces in the box of rice (I also threw in some magnetic numbers just for fun as we worked with numbers and counting). Place the rest of the puzzle on the floor next to the trash can.

Sift through the rice to find the puzzle pieces that complete the puzzle. We also read some number/counting books that came with our puzzle.

Fill a small tub with water, dish soap, and a sponge (be sure to turn up the water temperature when adding to the tub to make the dish soap bubble). Fill another small plastic container with shaving cream and mix with the appropriate amount of brown dye. Place a tub of soapy water and a small container of shaving cream/brown dye in a large storage box with little pigs. Keep a small washcloth or towel nearby to dry wet, clean pigs.

Pretend the pigs are dirty, then wash/rinse them and dry them. Play again!

Add a bottle of dish soap (yes, a whole bottle – buy the cheap stuff!) to your water table and fill it with a hose to make it bubble like crazy.

Fill an ice cube tray with pom poms and water (in each section) the night before or in the morning, then place in the freezer for the next day or later in the afternoon. Once the ice cubes are frozen, dump the ice cubes into a storage bin and set out a few scoops, scoops, and a muffin tin for sorting.

Scoop out and discard the frozen pom poms and sort them into different sections of the muffin tin or transfer the colorful cubes to a separate bowl or container. You can also add a small bowl of warm water with pipettes/eyedroppers or plastic squeeze bottles/spray bottles filled with warm water to try and “rescue” the pom poms (or thaw the ice cubes).

Preparation: Pour a pile of recycled bag lids into the bin and place an ice cube tray and a few scoops.

Mini star erasers (I can’t find a link to any mini star erasers but I used those too and just picked out the colors I wanted)

Preparation: Place seasonal colored play doh into a ball in the center of a divided tray. Place the seasonal items in a different section surrounding the play doh in the center.

Be creative! Play doh trays are the best because they simply invite children to play, discover, explore, create, imagine and learn. Completely indefinite. Sit back and watch what they decide to do with your assigned materials. 🙂

Play Ideas And Kid Activities At Home

Prep: Set out different colored play doh depending on what color buttons you have (we used rainbow colors for rainbow colored buttons). Place the buttons in a small container.

Sort buttons of different sizes and shapes by color. The buttons can be picked up with play doh or pressed while lying down.

Print and laminate (or slide into plastic sheet lids) play doh shaped mats. Line them up with your play doh. Help younger children start the process by turning play doh into “snakes” that can be used to make shapes. I also provided a play doh rolling pin and play doh scissors.

Use play doh to make/make shapes on different mats. The bottom of the mats also have words in different shapes that can be traced with a dry erase marker for kids who are ready to do this.

Activities For Kids Who Need To Move In The Montessori Classroom

Place the magnetic letters (we only used capital letters with straight lines because these are usually the first ones kids will learn to write) in a small jar and place the play doh on the metal cookie sheet.

What will they do? Select a letter and place it on the tray. Start by making play doh into snakes, then use the snakes to form each letter of your choice.

Use a piece of paper and markers or a small white board with dry erase markers to draw the excavators on the left, the road (with a dotted line in the middle) going straight, and the piles of dirt on the right ( on the other side of the road. Lay out the Noisy Diggers book with the appropriate writing tool.
