CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation employee was shot while closing the Friendship Sportsplex in north Charlotte Sunday afternoon, county officials said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a shooting near the entrance to the Friendship Sportsplex on Cindy Lane around 7 p.m. Sunday. When officers arrived, they found a person who had been shot.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. CMPD confirmed the victim was stable. Officials have not identified the victim at this time.
A Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation employee was shot while performing closing duties at the Friendship Sportsplex on the evening of November 27, 2022. The worker is being treated for injuries. The county is working with CMPD on this ongoing investigation. There is no additional information to share at this time.
Jerald Jones, who has lived near the Friendship Sportsplex since 2008, told Charlotte he saw police lights Sunday night.
“I saw lights in the street, and I thought it was a disabled vehicle or something,” Jones said.

He tells us that the area has seen a lot of recent crimes. Police hope to catch the suspect.
CMPD has not released any suspect information or announced any arrests in connection with the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

This is a family-friendly event, suitable for people of all ages and abilities. All participants must sign a waiver upon arrival. We will follow CDC and local health guidelines, including social distancing, and ask that you do not attend if you have any symptoms of COVID-19.

Parking: Campbell Creek Greenway trailhead (2116 Margaret Wallace Rd, Matthews, NC 28105) OR behind the Shops at Independence Square (7207 E Independence Expy, Charlotte, NC 28227; follow sidewalk to Margaret Wallace Rd.).
Route: When registering, please indicate whether you plan to go on foot or by bike. We will do an “out and back” route following the Campbell Creek Greenway. The bike group may also have time to explore the McAlpine Creek Greenway to the south, but everyone is welcome to explore the greenway further after the event. It will be a comfortable and informal event, leaving no participant behind. You are welcome to walk or bike less distance than the main group, or add more miles at the end of your time together. The Park and Rec director told Charlotte that some safety measures are being added to the trails, but it’s up to the community. Pay attention.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation department is planning how to improve and expand its parks and greenways in the coming years. Some residents insist that safety is at the top of their list.
None of Mecklenburg County’s parks or greenways have emergency call boxes, but avid runner Billy Shue would like to change that.

Shue has been pushing to make greenways safer since March 2016, when police reported that a woman was raped on the McAlpine Greenway.
“The aggressive activity that happened on the McAlpine Greenway definitely lit another fire in me that made me want to go to city hall and be an activist to try to get more protective measures in place,” Shue said.
In September 2022, two women were sexually assaulted near trails in Mecklenburg County. One victim was attacked on the McAlpine Greenway and the other near a trail in Matthews.
Shue believes better-lit roads and more police patrols could also help keep people safe. He brought his requests to the Charlotte City Council at their October 24 meeting.

Meanwhile, the Parks and Recreation Commission presented its priorities for the coming years to the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners.
Their goals are to purchase at least 400 hectares of land per year, accelerate the greenway expansion project and improve the park’s facilities.
According to Parks and Recreation Department Director Lee Jones, the priority is to make the region’s green spaces safer. However, he told Charlotte that there is also a need to keep an eye on the community.
“When you go out on a greenway be aware of your surroundings, try not to go alone and go at reasonable times,” Jones said.
Growing Our Greenways: Charlotte’s Mcalpine And Campbell Creek Greenways
Asked if emergency call boxes could be added to the routes, he said they won’t work for the area.
“Our greenways are built along riparian corridors, usually in floodplains,” Jones explained. “They flood from time to time, so when you have electrical systems that flood, things that rely on electricity become unreliable.”
To improve safety, Jones said Park and Rec will install more lighting at trailheads, parks and greenways in non-floodplain areas.
He said more mile markers are also being added to greenways with scannable QR codes that will tell residents exactly where they are. He also said the code would help police find someone who scans them if necessary.
