Today’s agreement (1/10/2020) aligns with the City’s Open Spaces and Recreation Plan that focuses on access, equity and quality, so that every neighborhood has beautiful spaces that serve people and the environment. The partnership will improve the quality of life for downtown residents while increasing the resilience of these three parks that welcome millions of visitors from the metro area and the world. Restoration and maintenance work at Boston Common, the Public Garden, and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall are part of the investments outlined in Imagine Boston 2030.
The Parks Department creates and maintains clean, green, safe, and accessible spaces on more than 2,300 acres of parkland throughout Boston. The department is responsible for the City’s 217 parks, sports fields and athletic fields, two golf courses, 65 playgrounds, 17 fountains, 75 playgrounds, 16 historic and three living monuments, an urban forest, four athletic fields of High School, and about 125,000 trees. , all comprising 2,346,1,000 acres that comprise the historic Emerald Necklace. We also maintain over 35,000 street trees.
The Friends of the Public Garden has worked in partnership with the City of Boston for 50 years to restore, maintain, and defend Boston Common, the Public Garden, and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. The three properties are national treasures and are located in the heart of our city. The Friends help maintain 1700 trees, 42 pieces of public art, and over 50 acres of grass. In recent years, the organization has completed many capital projects on behalf of the city, including the renovation and restoration of the Brewer Fountain and Plaza by Park Street Station on Common and the restoration of the George Robert White memorial fountain in the park. In partnership with the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, we’ve created our annual Out of the Park event, a free, family-friendly program that transforms a bustling corner of Boston Common into Fenway Park. When a Red Sox game is broadcast live on the big screen, we’re recreating the excitement of Yawkey Way and Fenway Park with free food and fun activities.
