If this sounds like you, the Blink Outdoor is about to check a lot of boxes. This sturdy, wire-free device from Amazon-owned Blink1 hit shelves in late summer of 2020, and has since become a popular pick in the DIY camera space. When we got our hands on the camera and began our full battery of tests, we paid special attention to the most essential features, such as video quality, motion detection, DIY installation, and dual video storage.

For the most part we liked what we saw, but there were definitely some drawbacks you’ll want to consider if you’re looking for outdoor security cameras. We understand this space can be complicated to navigate, so we’re going to break it all down for you here.

Our initial impressions of the Blink Outdoor are that it’s a vast improvement over the Blink XT2. As you may recall from our overall Blink camera review, the XT2 was Blink’s wire-free indoor/outdoor model, released before the Blink Indoor and Outdoor became a hit. There, we noted their versatility and appeal in small spaces, as well as a wire-free design that allowed us to install the cameras basically anywhere.

However, with the subsequent Indoor and Outdoor releases, we essentially replaced our Blink XT2 2-Pack camera system with two better, stronger cameras and a Near Sync Module 2.
Typically, sync modules and hubs are paired with security cameras to ensure a seamless connection in homes with standard Wi-Fi. In Blink’s case, you’ll need a sync module to use the cameras, which, as we know, can be a turnoff for some users, another stationary electronic device taking up space around the house. don’t want
But we want to note that the Blink’s sync module is much smaller than the hubs you’ll find in Swann camera systems, with their bulky recorder boxes that roughly resemble 1990s laptop computers. Instead, Blink brings to their Sync Module 2 the same subtle, minimalistic design they bring to their cameras, allowing for easy, discreet placement. (Just make sure it’s close enough to your router to get a strong signal.)
FYI: crappy base stations aside, Swan still makes good cameras. They did a great job alerting us to activity and even helped deter some unwanted critters from leaving gifts in our flower beds. If you’re interested, our Swann Camera review has lots of info from our experience.
These Battery Powered Security Cameras Keep Watch Without The Wires
We’ve setup on security cameras of all stripes and shared plenty of takeaways and tips over the years. In our tests of the Blink Outdoor, we have to say that we encountered one of the smoothest setup experiences we’ve yet encountered in an outdoor camera. (Its little sister, the Blink Mini, is even easier because it doesn’t need a sync module. Read more on that in our full Blink Mini review.)
One of the main reasons for this is that the whole ethos of Blink is based on simplicity. There are no complicated AI features to setup or whimsical setting adjustments to make. Unbox it, sync it with your phone, install it on the wall above your deck, and boom – you’re ready to go. If you’re looking for more high-tech features, though, you’ll always want to expect a longer setup time. See our review of Canary Flex for more details on how to deal with setup issues.
Suffice it to say, we had no trouble integrating this or any other Blink camera into our network. Pairing it to the Blink camera system we’ve already tested took no more than 5 minutes, but keep in mind that if you’re using Blink for the first time, it will take longer to pair the cameras – 10 It will take up to a minute.
Once we’ve scanned our QR code2 on the Blink home monitoring app, everything else is self-explanatory, allowing us to follow the in-app prompts and simply sync the camera and app wait and see. This simplicity is par for the course in DIY cameras; The technology is robust and powerful, yet easy to use for almost anyone.
The Best Night Vision Cameras For Home Security In 2023
Clearly, if you’re looking for easy installation, you’ll find that and more with the Blink Outdoor. (Rhyme not intended.)
Since this is a Blink camera, we knew even before opening the box that the Blink Outdoors would be reliable and effective. Having the backing of a global e-commerce giant like Amazon3 certainly doesn’t hurt.
But as far as aesthetics go, it’s important to remember that this is a very simple camera that’s meant to be discreet. At 2.7 inches tall, it’s about the same size as the Blink Indoor. As far as the camera is concerned, you’ll get a 110-degree diagonal field of view, which tells us that the Blink uses a standard-angle lens rather than a wide-angle lens. It seems a bit narrow to us compared to the ultra-wide lenses we looked at when reviewing Lorex cameras. They, mind you, gave us up to 160 degrees, so if you’re partial to wide-angle lens cameras, the Lorex might be a good choice.
All New Blink Cameras Debut With Outdoor And Indoor Designs
As experts, we know that some people want their cameras to look tough and scary rather than flashy and stylish. In our view, this can really help with peace of mind, plus it’s a logical way to display security tools that show you business.
We’ve reviewed a number of cameras that fall into this category. Chief among them is the Ezwiz CN3, a bullet-style device that lets intruders know their dirty deeds aren’t up to snuff. The Ezviz4 isn’t the flashiest brand when it comes to features, yet it has a flair that will definitely make rookies think twice. So while we wouldn’t call the Blink Outdoor intimidating, we favor cameras that blend into our home’s decor rather than stand out from it. The Blink, with its simple cubic face and only a small plastic stand for mounting, does that in spades.
Here are some important things to remember about DIY cameras: They may claim to record in 1080p, but that doesn’t mean they do so all the time.

Let us explain. The Blink Outdoor is built for 1080p HD video resolution, but it’s also built to be fluid. As our home Wi-Fi signal fluctuates throughout the day, the camera essentially solves this by automatically lowering the video quality and bouncing it back up when the network is stronger. This is important for those with a standard Wi-Fi connection, us included.
Of course, this also means quality suffers, but in our tests the difference was negligible. It is far more important for us to have a camera that suits our home and sends us instant motion alerts than a camera that takes flawless pictures.

As the security industry continues to evolve, cameras without two-way audio are becoming increasingly rare. Personally, we really like this feature because there’s nothing like using our own “outside voice” to scare off potential thieves.
This is especially helpful for times when you want said burglars to think you’re home… when you probably aren’t. Now, we do not recommend this strategy for every position, as it can be risky.
