The travel industry has experienced a dramatic increase in home-based travel agencies as well as travel consultants working as outside sales representatives on behalf of travel agencies. Rest assured that the travel industry in Ontario is regulated, all home-based travel agencies must register with the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) and comply with statutory consumer protection provisions when selling travel. Also, anyone who sells travel services or advises for the purpose of selling travel services must meet certain educational requirements and pass an exam before selling travel services on behalf of a registered Ontario travel agency. The exam tests Ontario laws governing the sale of personal travel services.
Regardless of where the transaction takes place, your travel agent is required by law to make certain disclosures to you about the travel services you wish to purchase before accepting payment and completing the sale. These include the total price of the travel services, the dates of travel and a fair and accurate description of the travel services to be provided, cancellation penalties, the availability of insurance and what travel documents will be required for each person traveling. The consultant must also provide you with an appropriate invoice detailing the travel purchase and showing the payment received.
