America’s Largest Indoor Waterpark Splashes Into Austin Suburb

A project four years in the making, the area is finally buzzing. Kalahari Resorts & Conventions, an African-themed, $550 million development, is set to open Nov. 12 in Round Rock.
The resort is planned to include 200,000 square feet of convention meeting space, a grand hotel, restaurants, spa, entertainment center, adventure park, retail stores, three acres of outdoor pools, and the largest indoor water park in the country. Combined, the latest Kalahari properties span a whopping 1.5 million square feet, notes a release.
Like other resorts in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the Texas resort is designed to be a destination for both families and businesses. The hotel’s 975 guest rooms include one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, as well as presidential suite options. It also offers five on-site restaurant options: Double Cut, Steakhouse and Bourbon Bar; Cinco Niños, a modern Mexican kitchen and tequilleria; Sortino’s Italian Kitchen; B-Lux Grill & Bar, gourmet burgers and shakes; and Great Karoo Marketplace, a buffet.
Tom Foolerys Adventure Park – another part of this multi-million dollar project – features adventure rides, climbing walls, an indoor zipline, bowling, laser tag, escape rooms and miniature golf. If regular bowling isn’t enough, traditional arcade games round out the “top” arcade fare, along with video games, blacklight mini golf, virtual reality, XD Dark Ride 5-D, and mini balling.

Then, of course, there are water features. Considered the largest water park in the country, the indoor water park spans 223,000 square feet and features 20 pools/20 whirlpools, 30 water bodies, a surf simulator, an adult grotto with swim-up bar and waterfalls. The park also features surround sound with a 37-foot LED display screen that can be rented for private movie screenings.
The property also has 10,000 square feet of retail spaces, including “Amatuli Market featuring authentic African items.” Once the space opens in spring 2021, it will not only be a place to indulge in retail therapy, but it will also offer workshop tours, activities and information sessions, a release notes.
You cannot hold conventions in your name and special facilities are not offered to business travelers. Along with the aforementioned 200K square feet of corporate meeting space, Kalahari Round Rock features two event halls; 16 meeting rooms and hospitality venues; and outdoor meeting areas and outdoor event space including event barns, covered terraces, lawns and outdoor amphitheaters.

In response to that challenging year, Kalahari has implemented a series of safety measures across its resorts, which are being used at the new Round Rock property as well as in compliance with all local and state guidelines, a representative said.
The company has also put in place a series of cleaning and sanitizing plans, requiring employees to take their temperature before a shift and wear masks while on property. To minimize the use of cash, the company offers guests the ability to add funds directly to a room key to pay for things during their stay at the resort.
