Here’s how it works: The Flashfood app shows which grocery stores in your area have partnered with the startup. Once you click into the store, you can see which foods are expiring or have expiration dates and are therefore being sold at a discount. Flashfood products are currently available in around 1,200 supermarkets, and the company says it expects to double that number next year.

Flashfood is part of a number of startups — including Imperfect Foods, Misfits Market and Too Good to Go — that are making it difficult to sell food cheaper to consumers. For the companies, it’s about sales while trying to prevent the world from wasting food. Approximately 931 tons, or 17% of all food produced, may have gone to waste in 2019, according to a recent United Nations report. Food waste is a major contributor to climate change.

“The idea, for all these services, that you could get something that’s fresh and healthy at a discount could be a big driver,” said Melanie Bartelme, global food analyst at Mintel. But there can be challenges with the approach, which requires customers to take extra steps to buy groceries.
Items sold through Flashfood are typically half off their regular price, said founder and CEO Josh Domingues. Meat is a top seller, he said, especially since prices have been rising. Fruit and vegetable boxes, around $5 for 5-10 pounds of produce, are also in high demand.
“It almost becomes this treasure hunt where they’re hitting stores and seeing what’s available and seeing what deals they can get,” Domingues said. This strategy is also good for retailers, he said, who may end up luring new customers through the app, because shoppers “want to go above and beyond and pick up [their purchases]. Once in the store, they can also buy regular products, increasing sales for the grocery store.
But the gamified approach may not work for all consumers, Mintel’s Bartelme said. “Anything that makes you take an extra step might just be a little harder” than just running to the grocery store at your convenience, she said.

Currently, you have to pay through the app and you can only choose products from a special Flashfood area in stores. Flashfood is exploring expanding payment options and adding delivery to make it easier for more customers, Domingues said.
The idea of marking down end-of-life products isn’t new—grocers have long had clearance drives to sell soon-to-expire foods. Discounting prices in a more targeted way is something retailers may eventually decide to do themselves, Bartelme said.
“It’s a huge white space for some of these retailers to do this internally,” she said. If stores go it alone, they have to invest in the technology, but can keep the profits for themselves. When retailers partner with Flashfood, they enter into a revenue sharing agreement.

The Giant Company, a Pennsylvania-based grocery chain that has partnered with Flashfood in about 185 of its stores, teamed up for the startup because the fight against food waste is “too big to do on our own,” said CEO Nick Bertram . “Finding a partner … was a better way to serve our customers and their families.” Plus, the partnership has “brought in new customers who didn’t shop at Giant before,” he said.

Donations for fresh, perishable foods can also be difficult to navigate, he added. “This is a structural challenge. Who picks it up, who delivers it, who pays the price and who guarantees the security?” he said.

A big issue is what happens after the food reaches the refrigerators at home. “We all have the salad container … in the back of the fridge,” he said. “It’s a major source of food waste and we all do it.”
