Here’s when you can get a refund for your non-refundable ticket: If you cancel within 24 hours of booking

If you book a ticket in the United States, the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires US and foreign air carriers to hold a 24-hour reservation at the quoted fare without charge.
Allow the traveler to cancel a reservation within 24 hours without penalty. This policy is known as the 24-hour reservation requirement. There are some restrictions, most notably that the rule does not apply to bookings within seven days of travel. Here’s how airlines should implement 24-hour booking requirements. If an airline cancels your flight, it will try to rebook you on the next flight. You don’t have to accept that flight. If you choose not to travel on the new itinerary, you are entitled to a refund for unused transportation. This is also true for a non-refundable ticket. According to the DOT, you can get a refund for the bag fee you paid and any extras you bought, such as seat assignments. If there is a significant schedule change
If your airline changes the schedule, you may be entitled to a full refund, even if you booked a non-refundable ticket. How much the schedule changes depends on the airline. American Airlines has a 61 minute rule. United Airlines will offer refunds in certain circumstances when there is a rescheduling (see Conditions of Carriage). A contract of carriage – sometimes called conditions of carriage – is the legal agreement between you and the airline. Often these terms list other provisions for returning a non-refundable ticket. For example, if you have a ticket on Delta Air Lines, you should read Rule 240 of Delta’s Conditions of Carriage, which provides: b. In the event of flight cancellations, diversions, delays of more than 90 minutes, or delays that cause a passenger to interrupt connections, Delta will (at the passenger’s request) cancel the remaining ticket and refund the unused portion of the ticket and unused ancillary fees in their original form. Credit card chargebacks are a last-resort strategy, but they can be very effective. That’s because merchants typically don’t compete on small purchases (under $100) because it’s not cost-effective for them to fight the chargeback.
Airlines will reimburse your next of kin if you die. This is a long-standing industry courtesy. There is no law or regulation that says an airline must refund the fare of a deceased passenger. But if the promise is in the contract of carriage, the airline must comply.

Some airlines will refund tickets – even non-refundable ones – as a goodwill gesture in the event of the death of a travel companion or the person you were visiting. Most airlines have internal (published) policies governing these refunds. If you want to claim this type of refund, you will also need to provide written proof of your friend’s death.

Sometimes life happens. Passengers become ill or declare personal bankruptcy before their flight. Airlines will review these refund requests on a case-by-case basis. In the year In late 2022, the Department of Transportation created a customer service dashboard to display airline policies in the event of delays or cancellations.
The dashboard should ensure that you have access to information about the services that American Airlines offers to help passengers in the event of a delay or interruption in airline control.
A green symbol on the dashboard means that the airline is committed to providing that service or services to its customers. A red “x” means the airline has not made that commitment. (However, airlines with a red “x” may offer these services and amenities in some cases at their own discretion.)
The dashboard is far from perfect, and provides a frustrating window into various airline policies regarding compensation in the event of a delay or cancellation. But according to DOT notes, these obligations do not affect your right to a refund.

Remember, if an airline cancels a passenger’s flight or makes a significant change to the flight — for whatever reason — airlines must issue a prompt refund to the ticketed passenger. This includes passengers with non-refundable tickets.
Get a refund on an eligible non-refundable airline ticket. If your airline or agent tells you otherwise, don’t accept it as a final answer. Just keep in mind special situations and send a short and polite email to one of the special customer service contacts.
