First, use LEGO bricks to make coded messages. You can use any brick for this! Create your key and then build a set of cubes to create a message.
Print the Spy Decoder Wheel. It’s such an easy way to generate code! And interestingly, this decoding wheel actually has 27 different codes. You turn the discs to set the code.
It’s also fun to create your own secret code! Children can enter symbols, letters or numbers in this code form. Print yours at the bottom of the post.

Use a graphite pencil and masking tape to make some really awesome fingerprints! It’s amazing how much detail you can see with this method, and I definitely prefer it to using a stamp pad.
Use items from the house to play a fun game of What’s Missing? This is a really great mind game for kids to help them recognize the power of observation.
Collect several small objects. The number of items you want to have will depend on the age of the children playing the game. I used this object tray with my 6 and 8 year olds and after a few rounds we added 6 more objects to make it more difficult. Preschoolers would probably need fewer items than shown.

Have the child look carefully at the tray and remember what is there. Then have them close their eyes while you remove the object. They need to figure out which item has been removed.

Before we started our spy week, I ordered two black lamps from Amazon and wow, they were worth every penny!
Black lights are light bulbs that emit mainly UV rays. These rays cause substances that fluoresce to glow under a black light. For example, black light causes white socks, white paper, laundry soap, teeth, honey, certain types of flowers, bodily fluids, and more to glow. (A side benefit – we used our black light to find the puddle our puppy left on the carpet. I smelled it but didn’t see it!)
Additionally, black light can charge phosphorescent (glow in the dark) objects VERY quickly. We had fun making our glow-in-the-dark glue bottle really shine!
Classic Outdoor Games For Kids
It’s fun to use glow-in-the-dark paint to make invisible ink. I bought this natural glow-in-the-dark paint at Walmart.
We used Q-tips to write messages with color. When it dried, you could see that there was something on the paper, but it was definitely impossible to read the message.
Side note – the color does glow in the dark, but it wasn’t impressive. The black light made it so much better!
I am very excited about this spy obstacle course! Our whole family really enjoyed the process of setting it up and trying it out. Perfect for a rainy day or birthday party.
