Flying this summer is ROUGH!!! I feel as a Flight Attendant I should try to share some tips for getting through airline travel for the foreseeable future. ✈️✈️

1. Things are not good….. if it’s less than 7 hours – DRIVE! I’m not kidding. There’s nothing fun about flying these days. On any airline. If you must fly, keep reading. 🚗
2. Download and use the app of the airline you are traveling with. You can do everything – get your boarding pass, track your bag, see your plane check in, and change flights. Definitely beats waiting in a long line to talk to an agent! Trust me – Usually this app will tell you the flight is canceled before the crew knows! 📲
3. Fly MUCH earlier than you need to – every day early if it’s important!! This week I have seen many people miss important things like weddings, funerals, cruises, international connections, and graduations. The tears were very real, for very real reasons, and there was nothing I could do about it! If you have to go somewhere, spend extra money, go a day early. Have a glass of wine and stay at the hotel, enjoy your night and not be stressed while everyone misses their event. 🍷
4. Always fly the first flight in the morning so you have the whole day to be rebooked if unlucky hits the fan. Yes, that means it might be a 3:00 alarm, but early morning flights don’t cancel often.⏰

5. This is not unique for this year, but keep in mind that summer is the season of storms. A single storm can close an entire airport. We can not fly through them. Storms usually form during the day. Book flights early! ⛈
6. Schedule long layovers – 1 hour layover is not enough anymore. 30 minutes, no chance. 3 hours minimum. 🏃♀️🏃🏃♂️
7. What you see in the news is an understatement. We are short staffed and overworked. Not only the pilots and flight attendants, but also the ground crew. Without ground crew there is no one to park the plane, run the jetway, get your bag on the plane, or scan the boarding pass. This causes a lot of delays that snowball all day. Sometimes for HOURS.(Another reason morning flights are the best!) 👀
8. When the flight crews get delayed when we leave. We cannot fly more than 16 hours. It is illegal. So it doesn’t matter if you have a wedding, if we’re done we’re done. What is the situation now, there is no backup crew, so when this happens your flight is cancelled. (Now you’re starting to see why it’s the best morning flight ever!) 😴

9. Avoid connecting in Newark (Or New York airport for that matter). This is literal hell. You have a 50/50 chance your flight will cancel or you’ll miss your connection. They have canceled flights at their starting points to keep the planes out, because there just aren’t enough people to manage the planes, so the gates remain full. Restaurants are also expensive, it’s not a good place to hang out. 💩
10. Be nice. As mentioned above, we are overworked and tired. We will not help you if you are evil. No one cares who is going to miss your cruise if you are an asshole. So even if we can help, we will save our help for someone nice. High voltage. Our patience is gone. If you make us mad – you won’t fly on our plane. We will leave you behind without a second thought, and laugh about you later. 🥰
11. Being drunk on an airplane is a federal offense, so don’t overdo it. If you drink too much in a bar waiting for a delayed flight, you risk not being allowed to fly. We’re too tired to deal with your drunk ass when we have legitimate issues to deal with. 🍻
12. Get travel insurance if you have a lot of money invested. I hate this whole idea, but I also hate the idea of losing money. Example: I took a flight yesterday that waited over an hour for the gate. A family of 8 missed their flight to Rome. The only flight of the day. They are going on a cruise that they will now miss. They were all crying, there was nothing I could do. (Also a reason to fly a day early!) 🛳

13. Flights are FULL. If you buy cheap seats you won’t be able to sit with your family. It says so when you buy your ticket!! The flight attendants aren’t there to rearrange the entire plane just so you can sit with your family because you’re trying to save $100 on a third-party website. 💸
14. Speaking of third party websites and saving money….. Like I said the flight is FULL. If a flight is oversold, and no one volunteers to give up their seat, who do you think will be the first to crash? You might think, families who save some $$ use sites like Expedia, Kayak, Hotwire etc. 🤷♀️
15. Be smart. Don’t be “That Person” Don’t hold onto a board because you’ve widened it open to busting and you can’t figure out how to make it fit in the overhead. (Passengers are also stressed, they can be aggressive when boarding a delayed flight) 🛍
16. Take a shower, brush your teeth, leave your perfume on, don’t eat smelly food (caesar salad and tuna fish, I’m telling you!), and bring headphones. Believe me. This sounds basic, but adds stress on a crowded plane. If you’re stuck on the tarmac for 3 hours after a 4 hour flight, you’ll thank yourself for this. 💜

17. Bring warm clothes if it’s cold. So tired of the half-naked girls asking me to turn the heat up. No. Wear clothes!! Side note: If you dress like this and ask for heat, there’s a chance I’ll turn on the AC. 🥶
18. That’s not water on the bathroom floor. For God’s sake wear shoes to the bathroom!!! 🤮
19. Don’t tell the Flight Attendant you look tired. We are and we know. You can cause us to ugly cry over there in the galley. 😭
